Cool Science Facts
For six months, I ran a blog called Cool Science Facts. Each week, I’d write about a fact that I found surprising and which I thought was not commonly known or was misunderstood.
I learned that controversial posts generate the most user traffic.
For example, one week I wrote that the speed of light is slow. It can take radio signals up to 42 minutes to travel to Mars and back, and at least to me, this seems rather sluggish.
The speed of light post really seemed to bother some people. It was as if I was stating that the sky was not blue, but green.
I assume that most people grow up being told that the speed of light is unimaginably fast, and when someone writes that it’s not really all that fast, it’s hard for them to fit this into their mental model of the world.
